Judging Good Waves

Bigger isn't better for beginners. Waves can pack quite a wallop. And a loose board driven by a large wave becomes a missile.

Take it from me, getting slammed to the bottom by a big wave is no fun.

What size waves to ride?

You don't need a "perfect wave" to learn how to surf.

Most people earn their sea legs in the white water or "soup" that results from a breaking wave.

Getting your balance
for the first time on a pitching plank will be hard enough, and exciting enough, even in the soup.
